Everyone likes to plug themselves or their products, and that is especially true in the NBA, home of some of the biggest egos and personalities in the world. There have been some notorious self-promoters over the years. Here are the top five that I could think of. Feel free to post comments with any additions or to talk about your favorites.
5. Lamar Odom
I actually got the idea to write this sort of post after watching Odom put some finishing touches on the Golden State Warriors last night. Odom has been playing inspired, perhaps even all-star worthy basketball ever since Andrew Bynum went out with an injury. But where was this sort of play when he was determined on making the All-Star team in 2007?

When people first saw this they were confused. Please tell me that’s not a tattoo. Is that a smudge? Ohh it’s HAIR!
Odom claimed he would keep adding stars to complement his strong play, and would hopefully be an All-Star by the time his head was covered in them. Yeah that worked out real well, Lamar…
4. Stephon Marbury
Marbury may be more or less washed up at this point in his career, but that doesn’t stop him from hawking sneakers!

Marbury teamed up with retailers Dave & Barry’s to put out the Starbury brand kicks, retailing at a modest $14.98 to make them afforable for the masses. A few years later, Dave & Barry’s has filed for bankruptcy and Marbury is irrelevant. A head tattoo sounds like just the thing to get back on the radar!
3. Ron Artest
Oh, Ron Ron – your antics never cease to amaze. If starting the Malice at the Palace or applying for a job at Circuit City weren’t enough, Artest has had a hand in the record business to boot.

And like any self-respecting egomaniac, he must put this on a podium for the world to see. Beyond just getting Tru Warier etched into his hair, Artest reportedly asked for a month off during the regular season to go promote an R&B group on his label.
2. Chris Bosh
Compared to the horrible, shameless self-promotion depicted above, Bosh is a good guy who got it right. While it still takes a certain type of person to engage in such activities, Bosh handled his All-Star campaigning tastefully:
It was well received and funny as hell, so I’m putting this all the way up here solely on success. Well done, Chris.
1. Shaquille O’Neal
Who else would hold down the #1 spot but Shaq?
He’s Superman, Diesel, The Big Cactus, The Big Baryshnikov, Dr. Shaq, Wilt Chamberneezy, as well as many others.

He’s a movie star/genie:

He’s a video game:
He’s also a rapper, a cop, a TV show, blah blah blah.
WE GET IT SHAQUILLE.
