I was hoping that the opportunity to write this post wasn’t going to present itself, but sadly, one can deny the fact that their team has been in dead last for so long before they have to face the fact that their season is over.
And just like that, the Los Angeles Kings are simply referred to as e-Los Angeles in ESPN’s NHL standings. The first casualies of the beginning of the end.
Not that anyone was really cheering for them to make the playoffs at this point, as that has long been an afterthought with the way this year has gone. But the term “mathematically eliminated” is just so utterly depressing.
As of writing, the Kings sit 22 points out of the final playoff spot with 9 games left to be played. 9 wins = 18 points. Oops.
Not even if you win every single game the rest of the way and the guys currently ahead of you in the standings lose every single game will you make the playoffs.
At this point, you’re either playing for pride or more ping pong balls.
But as depressing a phrase as it is, all you can do is use it as motivation. Time to work hard in the offseason. Time to develop your game.
Next season should be a fun one. Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brown are already top-tier. With one more year in the books, you best believe guys like Jack Johnson, Patrick O’Sullivan, and eventually even goalie Jonathan Bernier are going to be even bigger difference makers.
I think I have successfully typed my way out of the initial mathematically induced depression. Time to look ahead with optimism! Here’s to next year, boys!
